Classic recreates the game as it existed following patch 1.12.1, around September 2006, prior to the release of The Burning Crusade expansion. Player characters are capped at level 60, with all expansion content excluded, and nearly all gameplay mechanics from the original version have been faithfully reproduced. Given that the game's numerous expansions have significantly altered gameplay over the years, Classic provides players with the opportunity to experience the game as it was originally intended, while incorporating some modern interface and functional improvements introduced in subsequent expansions, along with the rectification of bugs and exploits that were present at the time of the original patch 1.12 release.
Players can select from the eight original races of World of Warcraft: humans, dwarves, gnomes, and night elves for the Alliance, and orcs, trolls, tauren, and the Forsaken for the Horde. The nine original classes are available: druid, hunter, mage, paladin, priest, rogue, shaman, warlock, and warrior. Consistent with the original game, only Alliance players can become paladins, while only Horde players can become shamans. Races and classes introduced in later expansions are not included in this version. The game world has been reverted to its original state prior to the Cataclysm, and areas from expansions, such as Outland, are not accessible.
