What is Area Control in a Board Game? | Board Game Basics - Area Control Mechanism
What is area control in a game? What does it mean when someone says a game is an "area control game?" Area control is a very popular mechanic used in board games where players are competing to control parts of the board through a variety of means. In area control games, controlling and area usually gives the player certain benefits, and control can change hands throughout the game.
In this video Jarred and Peyton break down the basics of area control games, and use some popular examples of area control games in their explanation. Area Control as a game mechanic can be intimidating, but it shouldn't be. The basics are pretty simple, and area control is usually pretty easy to learn.
Why do we do board game basics? Our mission with Kidsplaining is to get more families playing games, because playing games has been so valuable for our family! Our family loves playing games, and we want to share that joy with other families. There's so many amazing board games out there that can foster so much quality time amongst families, but with so many choices, it can be intimidating to pick up a new game. And all of the lingo can be hard to understand for families that are new to board games. That's why we started Board Game Basics. In each Board Game Basics video we break down one board game term or mechanic as quickly and simply as possible so that when you see that term on a board game box, you can know what it means, and hopefully have a good idea of whether or not you like that mechanic.
