About This Video
Who, or perhaps what is Herobrine? Rumors about a Steve lookalike with washed-out eyes have been around the Minecraft community for over ten years, but how did they start and is there any truth to them?
The tale of Herobrine began around 2010 on the infamous Creepypasta site. The story goes that a player would start a single player world, only to spot a weird looking version of Steve somewhere in the distance. When the player looked at the character or tried to approach it, it would run away. The player would then find unusual structures in their world, which looked like another player had created them. These included things like 2x2 tunnels, ocean pyramids and trees which had been stripped of their leaves.
The user made numerous forum posts asking if anyone else had experienced anything similar, only to have the threads deleted a few minutes later. Finally, after a few attempts, they received a message from a user named Herobrine, saying “Stop.” Attempts to visit Herobrine’s profile would return a 404 error.
The player eventually made contact with a few other players who had similar stories. They carried out some research to find out who Herobrine could be, and they found out it was a username used frequently by a Swedish gamer. Further investigation revealed that it was the brother of Notch, the creator of the game. The writer claimed to have emailed Notch to ask if he had a brother and received a reply saying that the brother was “no longer with us”. Since this incident, no sightings of Herobrine has been recorded.
