Learned helplessness is a psychological phenomenon where an individual, after experiencing repeated negative events or outcomes that are perceived to be uncontrollable, begins to believe that they are unable to change or control their situation, even when opportunities for control or change are presented.

Over time, these experiences can lead to a sense of hopelessness and helplessness, causing individuals to give up trying to improve their situation, even when there are opportunities to do so.

Learned helplessness can have a significant impact on an individual's mental health and well-being, leading to symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and a lack of motivation or initiative. It can also be a contributing factor to the development of conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

However, it is possible to overcome learned helplessness through various forms of therapy and treatment, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and exposure therapy. These approaches help individuals to identify and challenge their negative beliefs and behaviors, and to develop more adaptive coping strategies for dealing with challenging situations.
