What is Steam: The popular gaming platform explained. Steam Coupons? Steam Wallet?
Find out What Steam is.
i. Steam Coupons are discounts that you can use to buy games on the Steam store. You can get them by crafting badges, voting in Steam sales, or participating in promotions. Here are some steps to choose and use Steam Coupons:
- To see your coupons, go to your Steam inventory and select "Coupons" from the drop-down menu. You can also view the details and expiration dates of each coupon by clicking on them.
- To see which games the coupon can apply to, click on "View Applicable Games" on the coupon's page. You can also visit the game's store page from there.
- To use the coupon, add the game to your cart and proceed to checkout. The coupon will be automatically applied to the game's price. You can only use one coupon per game, and you can't use coupons on already discounted items.
- To trade or give your coupon to another Steam user, you can use the Steam Trading system. You can send a trade offer to your friend or accept one from them. You don't have to send anything in return to complete the trade.
ii. Digital Rights Management (DRM) refers to the technological measures used to control access to and usage of digital media, like games on Steam. In simpler terms, it's like a lock on a door, ensuring only authorized users can access the content.
On Steam, DRM takes various forms, but the most common are:
**1. Client-side DRM:** This involves installing a small program on your computer that verifies your ownership of the game before allowing you to launch it. Steam itself acts as the DRM in this case, checking your account when you try to play a game.
**2. Third-party DRM:** Some game developers implement their own DRM systems alongside Steam's. These can involve online activation, periodic online checks, or even limitations on how many devices you can install the game on.
**3. Social DRM:** This less technical approach relies on social pressure and community reputation to discourage piracy. For example, some games require you to be online to play multiplayer, which can deter people from sharing pirated copies.
**Reasons for DRM on Steam:**
* **Prevent piracy:** DRM makes it more difficult to illegally copy and distribute games, protecting developers' revenue and encouraging legitimate purchases.
* **Control distribution:** DRM allows developers to control how their games are distributed and used. For example, they can prevent unauthorized resale or modding.
* **Maintain online features:** Some DRM systems are essential for online features like multiplayer or leaderboards.
**Criticisms of DRM on Steam:**
* **Inconvenience for legitimate users:** DRM can sometimes inconvenience legitimate users, such as requiring an internet connection to play single-player games or limiting installation on multiple devices.
* **Security concerns:** Some DRM systems have been criticized for security vulnerabilities that could expose user data.
* **Ethical concerns:** Some argue that DRM is essentially a form of digital control, restricting what users can do with the content they have purchased.
**The debate over DRM is complex, with valid arguments on both sides. Ultimately, it's up to each individual developer to decide whether or not to use DRM and what type to implement.**
