There's much stirring on the interwebs concerning One D&D and the Open Gaming License. While there are many emerging details at this moment, we are going to take a moment to briefly explain (poorly) what the OGL is and the history of it. We may not know the future of 3rd party content, but we can at least tell you why it was important up to this point.

Update - as of 1/27/2023 WoTC has done a 180 on their plans for a new OGL and thrown the entire 400 page SRD (system resource document) for 5th edition straight into the Creative Commons effective immediately as an act of good faith. Score one win for angry gamers everywhere.
