I love the Famicom, the Japanese version of the Nintendo Entertainment System. I think it has an amazing style, it is ideally Japanese in every way. I love the look of the cartridges with the different art and colors from what we got in the US. One of the advantages, pun intended, that the NES had over the Famicom was in the controller options for the system. Nintendo themselves had the NES Advantage arcade-style joystick, but did you know that there was actually a version in Japan for the original Famicom? There was, and it was by the same manufacturer as the SNES Advantage, the ASCII Stick Turbo Jr!

Just like the NES Advantage, the Stick Turbo Jr is an arcade style controller manufactured by Asciiware and released for the Famicom. Designed to sit on a flat surface with your left hand using the joystick and the right hand operating the buttons. It features an adjustable Turbo functionality for the A and B buttons, and like the Advantage the speed is adjusted by rotating a dial to make the turbo faster or slower. There's also a Slow-Motion switch which rapidly pauses and un-pauses your game as you play.

Unlike the NES Advantage, there's no on/off switch for the turbo functionality. If you rotate the dials all the way counterclockwise it actually "clicks" to turn the turbo off versus the push button operation of the NES Advantage.

Also, unlike the NES Advantage, the ASCII Stick Turbo Jr doesn't have 2 controller plugs, as the Famicom only had 1 expansion port on the face of it (or side on the Famicom Turbo Twin systems from Sharp). This port can both work with Player 1 or Player 2, so a second connector was simply not necessary.

Did you ever know this was a thing? Do you own a Famicom? Have you ever wanted to get an NES Advantage-style controller for the Famicom? Share your thoughts in the Comments!
