Creating smarter cities is a key challenge for humanity in the 21st Century. And it involves taking innovation to completely new levels, bringing intelligence to objects ranging from maps to trash cans.

Much of this innovation was on evidence when the city of Barcelona, Spain, celebrated its first Smart City Expo. The Network's contributor Jason Deign went along to find out which areas smart city trend watchers might want to keep an eye on in the future.
