What needs fixing on this PS2?!?

Using Sony composite and component cables, my playstation 2 no longer plays audio correctly and sounds like an old school tv when nothing was on the channel. When I use the digital optical output, sound is crystal clear. Is it the DAC chip that finally gave up or something else? Hopefully someone knowledgeable on this can help or knows someone who can fix it. I've had this console since 2001.
