American Apparel is closing. In lots of places - it’s closed. Don’t bother trekking however far, hoping to avail yourself of the tshirts, hot pants, jumpers or underwear, the BASICS, once slung with such gusto. They are no more. On the occasion of such a loss, some may be lamenting. Some may be celebrating. I thought WE... might pause. And use this moment as an excuse to explore the history of the most stalwart of American Apparel’s basics. That which American Apparel itself called an ā€œiconā€. But not me… When I think American Apparel, I think, the hoodie. What is it about this seemingly innocuous article of clothing that gives it so many different meanings? Watch the episode to find out and let us know what you think in the comments below!
