Who is Lyanna Stark?
36Lyanna Stark is one of the most pivotal characters in all of Game of Thrones. Before the series, Lyanna was betrothed to Robert Baratheon. Then a great tournament was held at Harrenhal, where Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, the son of the Mad King, placed a crown of winter roses in Lyanna’s lap.
Westerosi history later said that Rhaegar abducted Lyanna and hid her in Dorne. This was the first in a series of events that led to Robert’s Rebellion and the downfall of the Mad King. Rhaegar was killed during this uprising at the Battle of the Trident.
Lyanna became pregnant with Rhaegar’s child and died during childbirth, a fact withheld from the grieving Robert by Eddard Stark, Lyanna’s brother, who was with her as she died. Lyanna made her brother promise not to reveal the baby’s true parentage to Robert, who would’ve had her son killed. Instead, Eddard raised Lyanna’s newborn and claimed the boy was his bastard son, Jon Snow, telling no one - not even his family - the truth.
