It's not exactly controversial to say the release of Baldur's Gate 3 was a tremendous success. It didn't emerge out of nowhere. It's studio Larian was renownwed for it's revivial of the modern CRPG genre, with the Divinity Original Sin series. But few in a an industry who had largely resigned CRPGs to the dustbin of history could have predicted the astounding level of it's critical and commercial success. All the more remarkable was the fact that it had achieved this success without resorting to dubious forms of monetisation, nor by simplfying it's CRPG mechanics.

This convinced many who were fatigued by rampat greed in the industry that Baldur's Gate 3's a decisive moment.

A wake up call for developers, who for too long had taken the easy way out.

In other words, it signalled the emergence of a new gold standard for game development. And any one who opposed this, was simply making excuses.

In this video, i'll show that, unfortuneately things are not this simple. And thus despite it's quality, Baldur's Gate 3 will not be a gold standard for the industry.
