Why Cleopatra is not the legendary queen
you think she is. Her story isn’t one
of rags to riches—she inherited the throne
from her father, handed to her
on a silver platter.
She co-ruled with her 10-year-old brother
but failed to win over Egypt’s nobles,
who exiled her to Alexandria.
When the powerful Roman leader
Julius Caesar arrived in Egypt,
she saw a golden chance to reclaim power.
She famously had herself delivered
to Caesar in a lavish carpet—
unrolled to reveal her lying
seductively inside.
It was Caesar who led the battle
and placed her back on the throne
as Queen of Egypt.
During her reign, Cleopatra never
expanded the empire or led troops in war.
After Caesar’s assassination, she seduced
his general, Mark Antony, to secure
continued Roman support.
But their combined forces were defeated
by Octavian, Caesar’s adopted son.
Rather than be taken prisoner, Cleopatra
took her own life—allowing a venomous
snake to bite her.
Do you think it's possible?
