Raised in Massachusetts, USA, Tarun moved to India at age 7 and began playing chess at age 12. He reached 1800 Performance Rating by 2015 before he decided to take a break from chess to focus on his education. An engineer and scientist from the Manipal Institute of Technology, he plans to pursue his higher education abroad and visit his father - a professor in Montreal. But first, he decided to play the Dreamhack Chess Rapid and Blitz, becoming the winner and 2nd runner up respectively in the unrated category with next to no preparation. How did he do it?
