There are a LOT of games that are mediocre and a few games that are profitable to sell again. The problem with remaking a mediocre game lies within the game itself normally. With the amount of effort it would take to put the kind of charm and polish into it to make it sell well, they could remake a more popular game and almost certainly make more money. A bad game is a little trickier. On one hand, there are a few games that are SO BAD that they are remembered for how bad they are. The first 3 that come to my mind all have different reasons and justifications for their badness, but let's take it from the top with ET

ET: The Extra Terrestrial: released for the Atari this game was the straw that broke the company's back. Due to poor and rushed development to get the game out by Christmas, this game is an unfinished, unfun, and unplayable mess. This game will NEVER be remade and that is because this game serves as a cautionary tale for developers trying to cash in on big-name movie IPs instead of putting substance in their game. Remaking this game would be like remaking the Titanic; you could make it better but no one is going to trust you. This game ended up being buried en masse in landfills and AVGN made a movie about it or something. So ET killed Atari, what's worse than that?

Big Rigs Over the Road Racing: I'm a little foggy on this one, and I can't even be bothered to check Metacritic to see if it is still there, but this early 2000s Mack Truck racing game held the title for worst reviewed game on MC for a very very long time. Metacritic, if you are unfamiliar, is a site that hosts a composite of scores from review sites across the internet and averages them into an adjusted score between 0 and 100. As an example, The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time is the highest reviewed game on Metacritic with a 99, not because OOT is the best game ever (coincidentally it has been remade like 3 times and re-released more times than that), but because AT THE TIME there was nothing like it and the reviews reflected that. Since then, many more games and reviewers have been made, so it is unlikely that people will ever agree that a game is that good again, but people sure were able to agree that Big Rigs Over The Road Racing was garbage and unplayable. This game will never be remade because… well, its kinda boring. It's like everything you love about Mario Kart with awful controls, terrible/no multiplayer, terrible graphics, a handful of tracks, no characters, and no items. I can guarantee if this game hadn't as poorly received at the time as it was, no one would remember it. I could see remake potential if they embraced it and made it wacky, but it'd still just be a budget sale fodder indie game. So we have the Company killer and the popular vote. Now it's my turn!

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006): You remember sonic? Once the proud face of anti-drug campaigns and second-rate hardware turned Nintendo's whipping boy? Well before Nintendo got to take a good whack at him (unless you count Sonic Adventure Battle 2 but that's kinda a cult classic to a lot of people) Microsoft and Sony got to warm him up for Olympic boons and whatever Sonic Boom is with their 2006 title simply: Sonic the Hedgehog. That's the first red flag for me, but I never bought this game. I was given this game by someone who didn't want it because they hated playing it that much. I didn't own an Xbox for a few years, but eventually I did get one and had the chance to play this game, and… it's hard to see how anyone thought this was a good idea. The game itself “runs” fine, but if you can make it through one of the 3 campaigns without experiencing a game-breaking bug or intolerable controller spaghetti programming, you are the outlier. I personally love this game. It has a charm that you can only get from a project with a huge and greatly underutilized budget. Think 100 people working on graphic assets and pre-generated cutscenes and 1 guy doing the programming, writing, level design, and everything else. A remake of this game that fixes the myriad of bugs in this game would be awesome id pay full price for it, but it will never happen. Sonic kisses the princess and then Sega had to blame themselves for about a generation full of furries. Also, no one will take that kind of chance on Sonic now. Look at Sonic Boom
