Coca Cola presents "Why Doesn't Somebody Sell Me", a 1952 film made by Jam Handy. Jam Handy Films was established in the early 1920's by famed Olympic swimmer Jamison Handy, and specialized in industrial films, film strips and other audio visual aids. This feature was produced as a training tool for Coca Cola sales distributors. Viewers understand tools of product placement and sales marketing techniques. Through a series of various sales scenarios, representatives learn methods to build a targeted 'personal profit story' designed to encourage store owners to line their shelves with Coca Cola. The film is directed by Richard A Walsh.
"The answer to our problem is more selling;" the sales director states as the film begins (:47). This sales lesson features Mort Marshall (:53) as Mr. Coogan; a busy and egotistical shop keeper distributors must appease. Mr. Skelly receives a parcel containing the plastic doll form of Mr. Coogan (1:15). Coca Cola sales slogans ring out; advertisements from the past. The old fashioned glass bottle of Coke is pictured (3:26). Coogan puts on a show for viewers, wild eyed and bow tied and peering behind thick curtains (4:14). Curtains unfurl revealing a sign for Coogan’s Grocery (5:58). He explains shelf placement (6:30). Coke bottles stack up (6:49). A wandering housewife spills in looking for scrambled eggs (7:04) and out after Coogan tells her there’s no eggs. Smoke billows; the register appears (9:04) jingling with increased profit (9:23). Coogan delights over profit (9:38). A Coca Cola distributor arrives (9:43) offering more cases. Coogan explains markups, record keeping (12:47), product inventory (13:15), return on investment (13:22), gross profit per square footage of store space (13:33) and customer traffic. A Coca Cola sales rep effectively coos Coogan (16:29). Another sales rep acts too aggressively (17:02) and Coogan rolls away. On a second attempt, the representative draws on Coogan's specific Coca Cola sales citing profit from the previous year (17:40), thus creating a 'personal profit story' for Mr. Coogan (18:00). Coogan discusses sales on other products in the store (18:39). The distributer discusses turnover (19:36) and relays annual sales figures (20:05). He suggests methods to increase the stores profits on Coca Cola (20:36). Coogan plays hard to get (20:55). The sales representative explains a cooler stuck in the front would draw in more sales (20:55). The rep discusses profit (21:23), Coogan and his register light up (21:23). A disgruntled customer runs to the back of the store for a bottle (21:46). Other products in the store are referenced (23:26) sales are compared. Coogan compares negative and positive techniques (24:27) of the sales representatives. He explains what the shop keeper’s main concern is (25:44). Coca Cola shelves magically fill the store floor (26:45). The film concludes as Coogan returns to doll form (26:59). The End (27:15).
Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
