Why is Rolson McKane So Messed Up?
This second video in the Rolson McKane series delves into the main character's sordid past. Rolson McKane is certainly one messed up dude, even for a crime / mystery novel like the ones Cormac McCarthy, Elmore Leonard, and James Lee Burke write.
The writing tip offered in this video is that sometimes writing a character means sitting down and putting the ideas to paper. It's not necessary to plan out an entire novel before you sit down to write.
In fact, a lot of Rolson's traits came about during the writing of the first novel, Boogie House. I didn't plan out all of his faults before I started the book. I just let it happen, and after the first draft, I took out what didn't actually work.
