Is anyone else confused by the F1 points system? Even Max didn't believe that he’d won the title!

The Japanese Grand Prix was one that confused us all, so we did some digging to see how the points work and why the FIA seemed to break their own rules.

Lets figure this out, but to do this, we need a bit of context.

his new points system was introduced into the Sporting Regulations at the end of the 2021 season.

This was to stop a situation like Belgium 2021 ever happening again.

For those of you who have forgot, in torrential rain conditions the Belgium Grand Prix was cancelled after only 2 laps being completed, which were behind the safety car.

Despite only 2 laps being completed which weren’t full racing laps (you literally aren't allowed to race eachother), half points were awarded.

Everyone agreed that this was illogical and not fair on the competitors so a scaled system was introduced in the rules coming into the 2022 season. It did have lasted effects on the outcome of the 2021 championship, but we won’t go there again…
