Many have asked the question “why are Nintendo Switch cartridges so small?” It sounds like a really simple question with a very simple answer: they’re portable; but there’s more to it than just that. Sure, we live in an age where games mainly come in the form of discs and Nintendo even embraced disc-based games themselves with the Wii and Wii U, but now they’re back with cartridges for the Nintendo Switch.

Why are they back with cartridges? Well, it might sound backwards on the surface, but you’d be surprised at how much advanced technology is in a Switch Game Card. These things are essentially little SSDs capable of read and write speeds faster than a Blu-Ray disc. On top of that, we’re seeing cartridges with bigger capacities than Blu-Ray discs so, if anything, it’s discs that are outdated tech, not cartridges. It’s also way harder to damage a cartridge than a disc, so having cartridge-based games on a portable console just makes so much more sense. Nintendo has done it with all of their previous handheld consoles, so we’re not surprised they did it with their hybrid Nintendo Switch as well. In fact, we’d be more surprised if they didn’t use cartridges for games on the Switch.

There’s more to why Nintendo makes small cartridges than just that so enjoy the video, let us know if you still buy physical games or prefer digital games in the comments section below and don’t forget to subscribe to TheGamer for more gaming content.
