In this video, I discuss the recent Steam open platform controversy in which Valve has decided to open up their platform to host all games with the exception of illegal or trolling games. The decision by Valve to open Steam up to any developers has rustled the Jimmies of a lot of people, especially those in traditional media and larger game media websites. Why? That's what I plan to discuss here today as to why Valve has ultimately made the correct decision for their platform moving forward.

TL;DR version - Valve is a company and is only beholden to their owners/investors. If they believe that an open platform is the best choice, then that's their prerogative. I believe that the new curation tools promised in the blog post, as well as the requirement for more transparency on the part of the developers, will ultimately lead to a better Steam experience while not limiting the rights of the developers to create and players to purchase games that some people might find offensive.

This doesn't mean I, or Valve, agree with or endorse the ideas in these games. Simply that someone's dislike or disagreement with the message of a game is an ethically immoral reason to stifle other's speech.
