0The Rockford Files Starred James Garner in maybe his most iconic role. He was Jim Rockford, a low-rent private investigator that would only take on the job if the pay was right - 200 dollars a day plus expenses - and if it was sufficiently safe enough. He stuck mainly to cold cases while he was gallivanting around in his gold Pontiac Firebird.
He made quite the name for himself because he had the knack for being able to sniff out the truth of the matter. He had some sort of extrasensory ability to crack a case no matter how long it had been since the case had gone cold.
Not only was he a great detective, but he was likable as can be - despite his sarcastic demeanor. The show bridge upon drama and comedy in a way that kept audiences coming back for more each and every week. The show wasn't canceled because of low ratings. In fact, it enjoyed relatively high viewership throughout its entire run. Garner eventually pulled out when he felt that he had sustained too many injuries throughout the course of the series.
In 2010, however, much to do with fan requests and passion, the show was going to be rebooted with the help of some familiar producers. David Shore of House fame and Steve Carell had signed on to be the reboot's executive producer and primary producer respectively. With names like that on board, it was crazy to think that the show would never see the light of day.
Problems struck production from day one, a weak script and poor direction resulted in a very lackluster pilot that failed to impress NBC brass. Even after rewrites and artful editing, the recut material still failed to impress NBC execs and test audiences.
