Bullets are typically made of lead cores but are jacketed (coated) with copper or copper alloys. Here’s why copper is used:
✅ 1. Soft Enough Not to Damage Barrels
Copper is softer than steel but harder than lead.
It reduces barrel wear and prevents the lead from smearing inside the barrel (called fouling).
✅ 2. Lubrication & Heat Resistance
Copper handles friction and heat better than bare lead.
When a bullet travels through a barrel at supersonic speeds, it heats up — copper keeps things smoother.
✅ 3. Reliable Expansion
In hollow-point or expanding bullets, a copper jacket helps control how the bullet mushrooms on impact, improving damage and stopping power.
