Wild Arms - Part 5/11 - PS1 - ワイルドアームズ ~ Haunted Ships & Separated AGAIN!
3Wild Arms is a beloved PS1 JRPG classic. And with such a banging intro, is that surprising? Interestingly, the game does not feature any animated cutscenes or FMVs at all in the entire game -- only its intro is animated. And let's say it right now: Wild Arms has a fantastic soundtrack. Good music always helps in making a JRPG a pleasant adventure.
Wild Arms has a Western flair to it, as in, the Old West, except it's a little steampunk-ish and features advanced technology in an ancient world, you know, the usual. You only get three characters for the duration of the playthrough -- Rody, Zack and Cecilia. The gameplay is fairly standard, with each character having unique special attacks. Wild Arms doesn't reinvent the wheel, it just spins it very well.
The game can be quite challenging in places, however. Death is not uncommon in this game, and it can get frustrating at times. There's also a good number of puzzles, one of them in particular being notoriously obscure. You also have to get your magic spells from magic guilds by giving in "crest graphs", and you can just get rid of spells to get better ones when you don't need them anymore. Running is also a fun part of the game, as it becomes second nature to just dash around everywhere and try to cut corners as close as you can.
The story revolves around a dying planet and the beings responsible for its decay. Admittedly, the story did not stand out to me, but the final part did catch me off guard. There are some colorful characters, however, like Calamity Jane the treasure hunter, Lady Harken or Boomerang. I've heard from a few people that some of the sequels are even better than this first game, so I'm looking forward to them. Overall, a fun experience!
Also noteworthy is that you can punch dogs. Or set bombs next to them to send them flying. Just saying.
