It's a QTE (quick time event) mixed with a rhythm based game (think guitar hero style). The idea is to press the displayed key or button at the correct time denoted by when it has dropped below a yellow line only. This makes your horse move and you will also have to press spacebar (if using keyboard) to jump over obstacles when needed. It is quite difficult to master and I think accuracy is more important than speed here. I did have a problem getting my horse to jump high, even when running at high speed, so I couldn't collect any coins at all.
