Over thousands of years, civilizations have used the moon's regular orbit around Earth to define months. Despite its apparent stability, the moon is gradually moving away from Earth. Scientists determined this drift rate by bouncing laser beams off reflective panels left by NASA's Apollo missions. They found that the moon is receding from Earth at a rate of approximately 1.5 inches (3.8 centimeters) per year, akin to the growth rate of fingernails.
