Games like Final Fantasy XIV can be a serious time investment, but they're also a financial one. Square Enix wants $10 bucks per month for a subscription, which is a bargain IF you get sucked into the story and the gameplay. You SHOULD try before you buy, and there is a surprisingly generous free trial that might just ensure you're sufficiently addicted by the time it expires.

In a nutshell, you can play through the entire base game and the first expansion for free, all the way up to level 60 without any time restrictions. I'll have a link in the description if you want to read up on the details.

I'm drawn to this game in a way that hasn't happened with other MMOs, and it comes down to two things: The first is the fact that you can switch classes so easily. Want to play as a Rogue, an Archer, a Conjurer or a gladiator without switching characters? Just equip the relevant weapon. And all the game's classes evolve into jobs, which opens even more gameplay opportunities and specialization. It needs to be underscored that you can level every single class and every single job with a single character.

The second thing is the story, and the fact that despite it being an MMO, it often FEELS like a single-player RPG I just happen to be playing online. When you need a party to run through a duty or a dungeon, the matchmaking system works consistently well and stays in the background until it's time to ready up and fight.

If you're already playing this game, you don't need me to tell you all this. But you might be interested to know that once a few minor tweaks are made, Final Fantasy XIV runs like a dream on Linux.

I've put at least 40 hours into it on Linux, and once you're in-game everything works flawlessly, with average framerates just a tiny bit lower than on Windows.

Getting to that point takes editing a couple config files, so let me walk you through that.
