Wing Commander was released for the Amiga and PC Dos platforms. It was one of the best space simulator game released back in 1990, and you can even say it was one of the best PC games released up to date. It was one of the first PC games to have cinematic scenes, and the game played like a interactive movie as well. It may not look like much today, but back in 1990, it was something new and revolutionary. The game was more complicated than most games at the time, and you needed to refer to the manual to play the game. This was because there were so many controls you needed to learn to play the game. It was kind of like a flight simulator game, and having a keyboard was essential to playing this game.
The graphics for the game was very good at the time. It required at least a 286 with EGA graphics to play. The recommended system configuration was at least a 386 SX with VGA graphics. The VGA resolution was 320 x 200 which was about the average for VGA games at the time. This was because regular VGA supported 320 x 200@256 colors, and 640 x 480@16 colors. The game itself cost about $39.99+tax to $49.99+tax, I don't remember exactly.
As for the game itself, it was very smooth in terms of game play. That is when I played it on my 386 sx-16 mhzs based computer. I also played it on the Super Nintendo which wasn't that great. The PC and Amiga versions were arguably the best versions for Wing Commander. For the Amiga, you needed at least an Amiga 1200 if you wanted to see good performance, and if you had a Amiga 500 the game lagged and had performance issues.
Wing Commander had a great story line, and you wanted to play the game to see what happened next. It wasn't a military campaign oriented game, like F-16 Falcon, LHX Attack Chopper, Su-25 Stormovik, or other simulator games of this type. That is why the game became a success and Strike Commander which came out 3 years later used the same formula, and it too was a successful PC game. Origin Systems was well known for role playing games, like the Ultima series. They made very good adventure role playing games, and they applied this to simulator type games. It became a success with the release of Wing Commander which lead to a very successful franchise from 1990 to 1998. Even a cartoon series was made based on Wing Commander called Wing Commander Academy. A movie was made based on Wing Commander in 1999, but the movie was a commercial failure. It was a failure even with a all star Hollywood cast, because the movie wasn't really based on the original video game. The movie cost $30 million to produce, but in the box office it only made $11.6 million. Movies that were based on video games never really did well in the box office for some reason. Super Mario the movie also did very poorly. Even a movie was made based on Doom, and it too was a box office failure.
I really liked this game, and it sold really well. A lot of people like it, and it did great on video game magazine reviews as well. The game came with a manual which was about 32 pages, and it was interesting to read. It shows you the origins of the Kilrathi human conflict, you also needed to read it if you wanted to learn how to play the game. It was quite different from playing a game, like Super Mario Brothers where you had only two buttons. This was one of the first computer games I ever played, and computer games had a degree of freedom console games did not have. If you haven't played this game, it can be played on Dosbox. The game ran a lot smoother on my old 386 sx-16 mhzs computer than on Dosbox. I wish I didn't get rid of my old computer. Try the game out and you will get a feeling of how 1990 PC games were like.
