Sharks are super old and super weird. They’ve been around, in one form or another, for almost 400 million years. They were some of our first predators when our ancestors were but simple backboned soft-bodied eel beasts. They’ve survived for so long due to plenty of factors not least of which is extreme adaptability to just about any niche that exists in the ocean throughout time. They’ve given rise to some of the largest predators to ever live, as well as the largest filter-feeding organisms alive today. A brand-new fossil fresh out of Mexico preserves the remains of one more bizarre shark to add to the roster. A shark that really isn’t so much a shark as a combination between manta ray and bigmouth shark. Meet Aquilolamna.
