Wings of Death is a vertical shooter for the ST that was released in 1990 for the ST by Thalion Software.

Wings of Death is a game programmed by demo coders, squeezing every little bit of power out of the ST. This is one of the best shooters on the platform. I remember first setting eyes on this title back in the day. It was amazing seeing the ST pushed to its limits!

The performance of the game is amazing. The player battles through 6 stages of enemies, with a boss at the end of each stage. An ample upgrade system for weapons also exists.

Be careful with the upgrades! Weapons have multiple levels of power, but if you pickup another weapon type powerup, you're back to square one. There are also damage, speed, energy, 1 ups, and screen clearing bomb powerups.

The Mad Max music is stellar. The scrolling on the ST is very good. The pixel art is amazing. The sound effects and even the voices just fit in.

I definitely think if this game had been released in the arcade, more people would know it. I think the game could have competed well with shooters from Japanese developers of the time.

I would definitely recommend this game. One of the best the ST has to offer. There is also a sequel, titled "Lethal Xcess: Wings of Death II". Hopefully that is another game I will get to in the future!

Played here is an 'Ultimate Edition' of Wings of Death, modified by DBug. The original ST audio is used, not the TFMX/Amiga audio.

This video was captured on December 18, 2018.

The game was played on an Atari Falcon, 14MB.
A VGA cable was used, connected to an OSSC 1.6 (processing the video in Line2x mode), with the output being captured by a Startech USB3HDCAP.

Video was edited with Shotcut.
