This is a totally remade from scratch, with all new footage, version of one of the first ever comparison videos I ever made - Wipeout HD Fury on the PS3 versus Wipeout 2097 on the Playstation One. I always wanted to go back and re-do this video if I ever upgraded to an HD video capture device as the Wipeout HD footage I captured in SD looked a bit shit and was very fuzzy and low res looking. It was also in the wrong aspect ratio and only 30fps. The old Wipeout 2097 footage was captured using an old version of a PSX emulator with a trial version of Bandiacm and didn't look a huge amount better.

This time I've captured the Wipeout HD Fury footage in HD and at 60 fps. The Wipeout 2097 footage is from a new(ish) version of ePSXe and has been upscaled and additionally anti-aliased to a certain extent. I'm actually using Wipeout XL for this, as it runs at a faster frame-rate than 2097 (30 fps vs 25 fps), but I'm from England so it's always going to be Wipeout 2097 to me...

The course on 2097 is Gare D'Europa, probably my favourite track in any Wipeout game. This is because it came on the demo disc when you got a PS1 and it holds a lot of happy memories for me, both initially playing it (the demo) on one of my friends PS1's and then eventually when I got a PS1 myself a year or two later before I eventually upgraded to the full game (by a happy coincidence the Cold Storage tune that's playing in this video was the one that was used in the demo). I'd owned a Sega Saturn up to that point, and whilst I loved it, the demo I'd played of Wipeout 2097 on that just seemed piss poor in comparison. The Saturn COULD do good 3D, but in regards to this particular game, with all it's transparency effects and what seemed like a better frame rate (not to mention a better soundtrack), the PS1 was hands down the winner.

The Wipeout HD Fury course is Anulpha Pass, a very cool looking track, that's not too tough. Both tracks are played on Rapier speed. It's not a perfect run on Wipeout 2097, but hey, considering I haven't played it in ages I was happy with a Gold medal on Rapier despite a few minor wall collisions.

Also, FWIW, I think Wipeout 2097 has got absolutely sublime controls for a PS1 game that pre-dates the Dualshock analog pad. The precision steering and true feeling or being in control of an anti-grav vehicle you get from a digital pad is amazing. Also, as mentioned in my olf Wipeout 2097 Vs HD video, I love the aesthetics of Wipeout 2097. The amazing soundtrack and the look of the game (with the help of the Designers Republic) really did make it feel like something from the future when I first played it in the mid-to-late nineties. And Wipeout HD Fury just looks simply amazing, a PS3 launch game that ran in 1080p at 60 FPS. The first time I saw it running on my mate's PS3 my jaw just hit the floor and I knew I had to get one. Considering this was a game that came out around the PS3's launch, I can't think of many racers that've come out after it that've bettered it graphically. It's actually kind of depressing how stuff like the Need for Speed games, that came out after Wipeout HD, seemed to set the graphical bar so low for future PS3 racers, with their jaggy, badly anti-aliased 30 FPS courses...

Studio Liverpool, we miss you!
