I think a franchise was attempted but for whatever reason it just never took off. I remember in the 90's people really wanted to get Tobal No. 1 but only because it came with a demo of FF7. I remember really wanting to buy a PS1 to play this because it was a fighting game with characters designed by Akira Toriyama. I rented it first and then somewhere down the line I ended up owning it but by that time I had Tobal No. 2 and I rarely played 1 after that.
My copy of Tobal No. 2 was left in a box after I moved back in 2004 along with a PS1 I had got modded to play Japanese games. I thought they were both lost for about a decade then one day they were found in a box left out in the desert sun and rain on my sisters back porch. The box was full of old games (mostly pirated) that I then had to toss out. A few months ago I found out I somehow still owned Tobal No. 1
Tobal No. 2 is the much better game but Tobal No. 1 is still a good fighting game. I honestly wished this series continued but these games in my honest opinion are hidden gems. Play them if you like 3d fighters and you ever get a chance.
