Synopsis:
Witkin & Witkin explores the worlds of identical twin artists in the winter of their lives; Joel-Peter renowned international photographer and Jerome, a realist painter and life long educator, “Joey and Jerry”. A feature documentary produced in Mexico with funds from EFECINE and with a Mexican crew, yet predominantly in English; the protagonists are American, the film shot in Albuquerque, Syracuse and Mexico City. Directed by Ariel award winning documentary filmmaker, Trisha Ziff English born, naturalized Mexican citizen.
An intensely human film that addresses the philosophy of their artistic practices as we witness them at work as well as navigating their personal worlds. Two men separated geographically at different ends of the continent, who only occasionally speak, but whose dialogue comes together in brilliantly edited (Jorge Marquez)and choreographed scenes, a homage to the work of Samuel Beckett. Absent are the voices of the specialists, gallerists, historians and art critics. The only additional voices we here are of the women in their lives, their wives, their older sister, their models, a studio assistant and collaborator, and a friend and collector. Through their voices we gain additional insight into their worlds. The voices of the “enablers” who bare witness to their narratives.
A film about perception and the relationship between painting and photography; about time and the story of two children who looked identical but over time could never be confused as twins. Does distance impact even the physical characteristics? A film which addresses family and dysfunction, illness and death; survival and commitment to ones own practices to ones bliss.
Filmed over four years Witkin & Witkin spans a crucial time period in both their lives, when events both planned and unplanned impact their realities, their perception of themselves as well as each other.
Reviews:
Great way to be introduced to the work of these twin artists who undoubtedly have a lot to say, both chose art as a vehicle to express all kinds of emotions and feelings.
A couple of comments I found very interesting. When one of the twins mentions the intention behind his creations and what makes him want to make them, as well as the complaint against the merely aesthetic empty art of today.
