After 16 seasons of basketball greatness, Candace Parker is officially stepping away from the game. Well, at least in terms of actually playing the game that is.
The No. 1 pick in the 2008 WNBA Draft announced on Sunday that she is officially hanging it up through a personal letter to her fans on Instagram. She let it be known that even though her playing days are done, she is still going to leave her footprint in the basketball world moving forward, with plans of owning both a WNBA and NBA team.
In her 16 years of ball, Parker won three WNBA titles with the Los Angeles Sparks (when she also was named Finals MVP), Chicago Sky and Las Vegas Aces, becoming the first player to win titles with three different organizations. She also won two Olympic gold medals and two WNBA MVP awards (2008, 2013), while posting career averages of 16.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game, a resume that puts her among the all-time greats of the game.
In recent years, Parker has spent time between games and seasons serving as a NBA analyst for TNT and it appears she will continue to make that a priority, along with becoming more versed on the business side of basketball. Although Ace will no longer be on the hardwood, she will still be in all other parts of the arenas. The game will miss her on-court contributions, but it will still have her around in many other ways.
