I never ever planned to capture anything from my XBOX since everyone who actually owned one back in the day threw it right in the trash the day the 360 came out. Also there is already a definitive channel here on You Tube that shows nothing but XBOX gameplay. That channel is MalstormG.

Anyone who has seen my channel knows that I love Doom and Wolfenstein 3D to death. IMO you can never have too many ports of these two games. This port shown here comes as a bonus game that must be unlocked in The Return To Castle Wolfenstein: Tides of War, that is exclusive only to the XBOX. You unlock this game by simply completing the game. Now that's what I call an incentive. I would beat a lot more games if they had treasures like these in store for those who complete them.

This port without a doubt is the best console port hands down. Some of you may be saying "Hey what about the 3DO, Atari Jaguar, XBLA and PSN versions?" First of all the 3DO and the Jag ports were not ports of the original PC version of Wolf 3D. Those ports were derived from the improved Macintosh port. Not that any of those ports were bad, but we are comparing the XBOX port to the original on PC. Secondly the ports on XBLA and PSN are crap. The music is slow, the weapon fire is slow, even the speech is slow. You can't get any closer to a garbage port than with the HD consoles.

Not everything in this port is picture perfect though. Sometimes there is an extra instrument in the music as heard in the menu screen. The weapon fire while faster than the HD console ports is still a little too slow, however speech and music all play at the correct speed. When you die the screen just immediately turns red as where the PC version fades into red. Sometimes there are tiny audio breaks at the status screen at the end of each level. All these things are very small and do not take away from the gameplay or fun at all. The sound is interesting as it supports 5.1 which is kinda lame as sometimes the sound isn't in it's logical place. Unfortunately since the sound seems to be optimized for 5.1, the stereo down mix doesn't sound right as you can hear in the video. It sounds way better in 5.1 but the reasons are very obvious why I can't let you hear that on You Tube.

Control wise it's typical for a console FPS. Not as good as mouse and keyboard by far, but more actually like most of us played it back in the day when it was just a keyboard. The game runs ultra smooth and is as I said a great incentive to play through Return To Castle Wolfenstein on the original XBOX.

Just as a side note, the best way to play Wolf 3D is none other than the ZDoom or GZDoom port on the PC. I have a video of that port on my channel if you have not seen it.
