The game takes place during 1960 in a world in which the Nazis won the Second World War.[3] The player assumes the role of series protagonist William "B.J." Blazkowicz, voiced by Brian Bloom, who is tasked with launching an "impossible" counter-offensive against the Nazi powers that have taken over the world.[3] Set in Europe, The New Order will have players infiltrating Nazi strongholds and battling legions of enemies, while taking control of "super weapons" that the Third Reich has used to dominate Earth.
Three years after the events of Wolfenstein, the Nazis have somehow developed advanced technologies that enable them to turn the tide against the Allies. Famed Office of Secret Actions agent B.J. Blazkowicz, accompanied by Royal Air Force pilot Fergus Reid and US Army Private Probst Wyatt, takes part in a massive Allied raid against a fortress and weapons laboratory run by his old nemesis, Wilhelm "Deathshead" Strasse. The three are captured and brought to a human experimentation laboratory where Deathshead forces Blazkowicz to choose whether to gruesomely kill Fergus or Wyatt before leaving Blazkowicz and the survivor to die in the laboratory's emergency incinerator.
Blazkowicz and the survivor plug the incinerator's gas mains to buy themselves time to jump out of the laboratory's only window, but the built-up pressure causes the laboratory to explode violently, and Blazkowicz suffers a critical head injury from shrapnel before falling into the ocean.
He is discovered by fishermen and brought to an asylum in Poland where he remains in a vegetative state. He is cared for by nurse Anya Oliwa and her family, who run the asylum. Aware of his surroundings, he is forced to watch as Nazi authorities frequently force her family to hand over disabled patients. Fourteen years later, the Nazis order the asylum shut down, killing all the patients and executing Anya's family when they try to resist. B.J. witnesses all of this and awakens from his vegetative state, rescuing Anya and escaping the asylum with the officer in charge of the operation as his captive.
B.J. and Anya drive to her grandparents' farm, where they inform him that the Nazis forced the United States to surrender in 1948 through the use of nuclear weaponry and that the members of the ensuing Resistance were captured. B.J. interrogates the captured officer, learning that the Resistance's top members are imprisoned in Berlin before killing him with a chainsaw.
He finds that the resistance movement is a revived Kreisau Circle led by Caroline Becker, who survived the events at Isenstadt.
