Tanegashimas (the colloquial Japanese name for ancient firearms).

Originally introduced to Japan by the Portuguese in 1543, when Portuguese sailors landed on the island of Tanegashima - hence the name. Chinese firearms had made their way to Japan as early as the 13th century, in the form of relatively primitive hand cannons, but had not make quite as big an impression.

Apparently the lord of Tanegashima purchased a couple of muskets from off of the Portuguese, but then ordered the design copied and set about manufacturing muskets of his own almost immediately. Tanegashimas became commonplace during the Sengoku period, when warring lords decided that the Tanegashimas were effective weapons. Allegedly (and obviously I don't know if this is true or not) Japanese firearms manufacture outstripped that of Europe during this period.
The following Edo period was more peaceful, and firearms became more common in civilian use rather than warfare. They made a resurgence during the Meiji restoration, although this time Japan would rely more on imports of modern weapons that visually had a less distinctive Japanese style.

I made a couple of different versions, basically long rifle and arquebus. Although Tanegashimas were smoothbore for most of their history, not rifled. But you get what I'm saying.

I'm not sure which version I'll be using with the upcoming Ashigaru regiment, but I'm leaning towards the shorter arquebus.

I kind of skimped out on some of the design features - for example, the percussion cap are not from any Tanegashima image I've seen. I just took the entire cap from off of a Swedish musket I designed a while back.

I think I might still release the Tanegashima models as separate products, as a stopgap until the Ashigaru regiment is ready for release. Which might be a while.
