World of Warships - First Look: Tier V British Cruiser HMS Hawkins
Tier V British heavy cruiser HMS Hawkins looks a bit like Emerald on steroids. She has the same turret layout as her light cruiser cousin, but instead of packing seven single 152mm mounts, she packs seven single 190mm ones.
Defense
+ Hawkins clocks in at 32,200 hit points; this is a huge pool of health for a Tier V cruiser. Only Genova and Furutaka even top out over 30,000, and Hawkins leaves them in the dirt, so yeah, this ship has health to burn.
+ 10% TDS is awful, but not uncommon for a World War I cruiser design.
+ 76mm of citadel belt armor is not uncommon. This is what you find on Furutaka, Omaha, Exeter, and Emerald. It will not stop battleship shells at anything beyond autobounce angles, and heavy cruisers will still pen you reliably if Hawkins shows them her soft bits.
+ No Tier V cruiser has an AA suite that could be called "good". With that said, Hawkins' is above average for the tier. Her mid-range aura in particular packs a solid punch, though it only extends out to 2.5km.
Offense
+ Hawkins' main battery is comprised of seven single-mount 190mm guns in a turret arrangement identical to her light cruiser cousin HMS Emerald. Five of these turrets are mounted along the centerline; the remaining two are "waist" turrets that can only fire on their side of the ship. Her 190mm shells reload every 14 seconds, which is about where you'd expect. The only other ships in her tier with similar calibers are Genova, Furutaka, Exeter, and Kirov, and excepting Genova, they all reload in 15 seconds.
+ The shell performance of these guns takes some getting used to. The range is limited: 13.9km ties her with Furutaka, for example. For me, it was the shell velocity that was hard to work with.
+ Her overall DPM is about where you'd expect to find it. She's basically equivalent to Exeter, but behind Furutaka, which is reasonable given her other advantages we'll discuss in a moment.
+ She does come with torpedoes: a double rack on each side of the ship with a 7km range. These are the same torps mounted by Emerald.
Handling & Detection
+ Hawkins is slow. Painfully so. With a top speed of 30 knots, she'll be glad that she will see a lot of mid-sized 36x36 maps.
+ Given her speed, she handles okay with her turning circle and rudder shift, but remember that British heavy cruisers bleed more speed in turns than the light cruisers do.
+ Detection-wise, she's fairly average. Fully rigged for stealth she comes it at an even 11km detection radius. Furutaka outspots her, but she's stealthier than even some of the light cruisers at the tier.
Consumables
+ Hawkins has access to only Damage Control Party, Repair Party, and Hydroacoustic Search.
+ Her heal is the British regular cruiser heal, same as Emerald. Used wisely, these will absolutely keep her in a game longer than most other same-tier cruisers. The only other cruisers with a heal at Tier V are HMS Emerald and HMS Exeter. These are a precious commodity for a mid-tier cruiser; used wisely, they will make a so-so game into a great one.
+ The hydro is identical to British destroyer hydro, so it's great for defense, but less useful for hunting down targets in smoke.
