In the period between September 5 and 12 the forces of the Entente hurled a large-scale offensive against the Germans. This attack was very important for the Allies from a strategic viewpoint and became known in history as the Battle of the Marne. The six armies of the Allies were opposed by five German armies. Overall some two million soldiers were involved in the hostilities. Volleys from over 6,000 artillery units were heard. The frontline spanned over 180 kilometers. The French 6th Army managed to launch an unexpected strike onto the right flank of the German 1st Army thus breaking open the enemy defensive line. At the same time, the English and the French 5th Army, using the opportunity, started advancing toward the German 1st Army from the other flank. This created a situation where the 1st Army would be encircled and the right flank of the German 2nd Army would be crushed. The German command had no other choice but to order its right wing to retreat. The Germans fell back and took new defense positions. The enemy offensive was stopped, which became a breaking point at the start of the war and changed the plans of the German command...
