Worst Character Type The Non Adventuring Adventurer- GM 911
Original GM 911 Post
Greetings Nerdarchy! I was hoping to get some helpful advice for dealing with a non-adventuring adventurer.
I run large parties of 6 - 10 players for campaigns that last up to 10 months at a time. I've had really good luck with my players thus far, all eager to delve into whatever I have in store. That is until recently.
I currently have a player who absolutely will not bite on quest hooks and often chooses to go off on her own while the entire rest of the party heads ro where the next quest obviously resides. A few examples from past quests are:
1. A small clan of druids have taken responsibility for protecting an area from a creeping evil loosing itself on the land causing blights and eventually the destruction of the area and asked the party for assistance. Problem player declares that it's not her fight and argues with other players that getting involved will likely get them killed.
2. A village elder suspects that a pair of necromancers have taken residence down an old, abandoned well near a dilapidated cottage and they are responsible for the recent disappearances of some of the villagers, as these necromancers have been suspected of performing tests on living beings in the past. Problem player makes a stand against her party and declares that not all necromancers are evil and that the village elder had no solid proof; therefor, she chose to sit that one out.
3. A king's daughter ran off with a cult that had taken residency in a monastery and he believes that she is being held against her will along with several other young women from his city. His information came from one of the girls who escaped and reported that those who refused to convert were being sacrificed. Problem player chastised the king for being a bad parent for creating a home environment that was less appealing than the cult and that he was responsible for her running off in the first place. My other players were eventually able to calm the king down and convince the player to go along despite her reservations.
These are just a few examples. In fact, I don't think this player has ever been eager to go on a quest in the year and a half that she has been in my campaigns, although she claims she thoroughly enjoys all of them. I run open campaigns where I will present a few delimas and it's up to the players to decide what they want to do, but I can only prepare so much material each week! Have you guys encountered this type of player and if so, how did you handle it without telling them that the quest is over here, therefor, you WILL go over here.
