[WR] TOTD September 2nd 2020 - Antarctica (42.238)
After my first TOTD WR at the end of August, I wished for more ice TOTDs in September and was pleasantly surprised when I saw this map. Once again, I claimed the World Record by a comfortable margin (+0.145s to 2nd, +0.307s to 3rd) with plenty of room for improvement, especially considering how much time I lost at the ending. This run was on pace for 41.9x, but I drifted slightly wide after CP4 and dropped the gear at CP5.
Gear management here is crucial in every sector on this map.
Sector 1 you want to go from reverse to gear 1 instantly to get optimal acceleration and speed for the next 2 ice drifts.
Sector 2, try to keep 3rd gear and avoid going over too much snow before getting to the road (Small amounts of snow is ok)
Sector 3, you need good speed from the start to keep the upper gear while getting a nice drift line, if you have low speed, you need to deliberately keep the lower gear to avoid "stalling" mid drift and losing all grip.
Sector 4, Lower Gear is better after the CP because you land in the perfect spot at the bobsled to get the most speed possible, land in the middle while facing left and then make the car parallel with the coloured lines on the bobsled and smooth steer until you hit the "sweet spot" for maximum speed. Avoid excessive steering after the bobsled and land on the road close to the right side wall to keep optimal speed
Sector 5, is the hardest part in the map, you need to get the perfect angled slide while going inside the small banking. If you need to adjust, only do tiny releases or brake taps. You want to control your speed so you do a short jump into CP5, but keep 4th gear (which I failed in this run)
Final sector, jump from middle to left to get the least airtime and a smooth landing into the bobsled turn, line up parallel with the coloured lines, smooth steer until you finish the turn and then full steer to the right until you land and face towards the last bobsled entry. Turn left as late as possible so that the car enters the last wall smoothly to keep maximum speed into the finish.
I'm feeling more and more confident on ice maps, not just for hunting fast times, but my consistency as well, which is a huge confidence boost for the upcoming Open Grand League!
