A unique recycling project is underway, using First World War shell parts to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. The fuses from the shells are being turned into poppy pins to raise money for the Royal British Legion. There were 19,240 casualties on the first day of the battle alone. By the end of the campaign, more than 1,000,000 British soldiers had died.
