WX-78: Still Boring as Manure? [Don't Starve Together Character Refresh]
In which I discuss the recent WX-78 character refresh/rework/update for Don't Starve Together, and aim to divulge whether WX is now like... actually fun to play. Also featured in this video is an at-length discussion about balancing. Hooray.

If you had asked me prior, I would have almost certainly said that WX-78 was one of if not the more boring character in Don’t Starve. For the simple reason that they had no longterm appeal whatsoever. Once you had upgraded your max stats by eating gears - a perk which arguably wasn't even that impactful, because like - armour and healing exists - you had run out of character-specific things to do. And I guess having more health is useful for the bulk of the game, but it's not particularly exciting, especially once that initial novelty of 'wowee look at me, I gots 400 health!' wears off. Additionally, the reliance on gears meant that you either went to the ruins, a dangerous area full of goodies, including plenty of mechanical junk.
Circuits are obtained by scanning filthy organics with the Bio Scanalyzer. This will unlock blueprints for certain circuits, which, when combined with Bio Data obtained from scanning and a material obtained from the respective creature, will produce a new circuit.
I'm honestly quite a big fan of this mechanic - it's similar to how Webber's refresh encouraged Webber players to experiment with befriending different types of spiders in order to obtain their switcher doodle recipes. Different methods for obtaining various recipes instead of just existing next to a prototyping station makes obtaining these sorts of things much more interesting, and adds some more character-specific progression, something which WX sorely needed.
In order to scan something, you must deploy the scanalyzer and then remain within the circle yourself, alongside the scanning target. This means that you have to be clever about things in order to get that data, which honestly makes this little interaction pretty enjoyable. It’s interesting that the scan mechanic was designed so that you actually have to plan your method of ‘attack,’ instead of just, I dunno, walking up and pressing a button.
In short, there are modules to increase WX’s base stats, a la eating gears, grant heat or cool generation properties, increase speed a la overcharge, (which also no longer exists as of this update, although lightning strikes still heal) and grant night vision or illumination. There are also a couple of gimmicky modules that sing to nearby plants and give WX minute amounts of health and sanity regen, but these are mostly forgettable for the most part. Actually, nope, I take that back, the music box circuit is probably one of the most powerful tools the game gives you for annoying your teammates.
Oh hey! You're at the bottom of the description! You actually read it! Well, congratulations, I guess. Most people just kinda skip the description.
