X-COM:EO is a turn-based combat strategy game first released in 1994 for PC, Amiga and Playstation. It has been re-created for modern hardware by Firaxis and 2K Games who've done their usual good job with the Linux version.

The game places you in charge of an organisation fighting to defend Earth from an alien threat. You send your squad of soldiers on missions, collect alien body parts and technology, then bring them back to your base where your scientists can use them to make more effective weapons. You have to think carefully about cover and lines of fire and it's quite easy to get someone killed with one dumb move.

XCOM is currently available as part of the Steam Free Weekend Weekend, so you can play it for free until Sunday. It is also being given away free to voters for the CVG Golden Joystick awards - you have until the 20th October to vote.
