The Xbox 360 was released way back in late 2005, and since then despite it all the console has been a success. Microsoft built the system around a tri core Power PC based CPU, running at 3.2 GHZ, each core capable of handling 2 threads. The Xbox 360 used a R520 / R600 hybrid from ATI (now AMD of course), with 48 piepes, clocked at 500MHZ and with a fast 10MB buffer similar to the XBox 720's supposed design (although XBox 360 version isn't tied into the CPU also, ike the XBox 720's).
Memory is unified, allowing the makers of the games to use it how they require. What matters most of all though, is that for the most part with the base specs, Microsoft got it right - the console generally outperformed the playstation 3 - and moreover, the XBox 360 was easier to program for (although there were titles like Uncharted on the PS3 and of course, the Last of Us which look fantastic).
The 360 did have a few issues, the 360's GPU (the Xenos) was widely regarded to be the issue of the infamous RROD (red ring of death) on the console, and rumoured failure rate was between 30 and 33 percent.
The XBox 360 also lacked the hard drive as standard, and all of this combined with lack of a HD-DVD or Blu Ray drive has likely hampered the console overall. Regardless, the XBox 360 is a fantastic console - will the next generation XBox 720 (Durango) be even better? Let's hope so!
