HISTORY

In the buildup of the total Tellurian population breaching the tens of billions, the sparsely populated Antarctica became an object increasingly leered at. Though the stark costs of development initially meant that only researchers, explorers, and soldiers could survive there, the stalwart progress of technological development and climate change guaranteed the continent’s transition from cryogenic to commonly cold. Indeed, as the blastulae that would develop into the kōtetsushimajima garnered fierce rebukes for their suspect groundwork and underexplored capacities, the traditional allure of urban sprawl meant the wild days of the icy south were numbered.

Of those emphatic on the topic of Antarctic civilization, there was one family who always led the charge. Always masterly opportunists, they waltzed between the Okhrana and the Cheka, the Mensheviks and the Bolsheviks, even going as far to grant a coquettish curtsey to the Nazbols and the Duginists. With the grace of a shotgun blast, the buckshot spread far enough for no single target to evade a pellet. What was considered to be the philosophical bedrock for the House of Boyarovich, however, comprised of two central facts: that their loyalties were exclusively dedicated to themselves alone and their common cause of justifying the family name.

Nevertheless, for as politically fair-weather as they were within the climate of their homeland, the Boyaroviches had a pragmatic reason to never emigrate. Not only were they a stone’s throw from the nexuses of power, but they were also industrial dynamos. Already perturbed at the country’s comparatively sedentary modernization when gauged against the rest of Europe, Zinoviy Boyarovich catapulted his bloodline into the historical record thanks to the breakneck development of the family foundry. Tempting as it were to oversimplify his life to that of a Russian Carnegie, the signs were evident from the start that he heralded a family of Randian chameleons.

The core irony of the Boyarovich legacy was that, despite being anathematic to the Soviet ideal, the family was accredited for keeping the country economically solvent throughout the twentieth century. From Serafima Boyarovna’s achievably comprehensive five-year plans written in strict concurrence with the Stalinist mainline to her nephew Germogen’s foundational theories on what would be called perestroika, the family’s fingerprints were peppered throughout the USSR if one inspected closely enough.

Those too shy to handle the life of a public figure, Cold War or not, found their niche as ready apparatchiks, enthusiastic to distort common interpretations to suit the needs of whomever they served. Even if they remained satisfied to stick to the background, the Boyaroviches resided in a paradise where the milk and honey were on tap. With the resources they had at the ready, the family was effectively impregnable from the factions impatient to peonize them.

However, fate was about to guide them to their true destination in the form of a tremendously close call. In the aftermath of the twin strike that was the Jupiter Affair and the Cuban Missile Crisis, a wave of existential dread came to roost faster than any degree of mutually assured destruction. Such an imagined plausibility was at its most blinding, whether out of self-preservation or callousness, from within the collective consciousness of the aristocracy. Indeed, for as often Khrushchev and Kennedy publicized their talks to demilitarize, they just as frequently discussed in private the topic of a haven for the cream of their countries to escape to.
