Xenonauts is a spiritual successor to the original XCOM games, developed independently from actual franchise which Firaxas develops.

You're probably wondering what the differences between this and Enemy Unknown are. To be honest it's too much to list, it'd be quicker to list what's the same, which is the theme and squad based combat.

Some differences to note are in Xenonauts you start with 8 person teams, where in Enemy Unknown you start with 4. In Xenonauts your characters all have around 40-60 TUs, which are action points and as long as you have enough for tasks you can do them - whereas in Enemy Unknown you get only two moves. In Xenonauts characters are always in overwatch if they have enough TUs to shoot at the end of a round - in Enemy Unknown you have to spend one of your two moves to do that.
