By hitting the Y button, you immediately reset your shot to be parallel with the ground. While this can be used in flat stages like Port Mackerel and Piranha Pit, it often leaves you exposed, making right-side peeking and jump snipes better options. I have found a small use for it though in dealing with people climbing up to sniper spots.
