Having used PC's to make music since around 1996, I experimented with many different audio solutions over the years, most notably with the Soundblaster AWE64 gold, combined with a Yamaha DB50XG daughterboard. As someone who came from the Commodore 64 and Amiga for music production, these soundcards were a startling revelation. As time wore on I moved more to external hardware synths, and then to Virtual Instruments... and then back again recently to hardware. In the mid-2000's I got a Yamaha SW1000XG soundcard, a combined PCM digital audio and XG sound solution with the full XG rom soundset. Windows 7 was the deathknell to that card's function, and saw an end to my XG compatible hardware.

I've pined for those sounds to this day even though I have technically far superior instruments at my disposal. So when I saw for sale a vintage rackmount standalone XG sound solution running the enhanced romset.. I just had to have it :)
