Yasuke is a six episode anime, created by LeSean Thomas and developed by studio Mappa, that follows the life of the historical and titular Yasuke, an African man who was known to serve under Oda Nobunaga as a retainer up until his defeat. While history is unclear as to what ultimately happened to Yasuke, Thomas' adaptation will tell a much wackier story of that hidden legacy, a narrative that includes mecha warfare, were-animals, artificial intelligence, mystics, and violently powerful psychics. Go into Yasuke with an open mind, one that is willing to accept that this show is obviously not meant to be historical fact for the most part, and you may just enjoy it for its high energy, interesting choreography, great music by Flying Lotus, and interesting voice cast. Or maybe you won't and then you'll angrily tell me about it. Do that too, that's fine too.


This is part of a series where I review new anime in a season (Spring 2021). My rules for this are: I am basing these reviews off the first two episodes alone to allow myself and you guys to have room to decide if continuing the show is personally worth it (ACTUALLY THIS ONE IN PARTICULAR IS BASED ON ALL OF THE EPISODES AND I'M NOT FOLLOWING MY OWN RULES HERE BUT IT'S MY CHANNEL SO YA KNOW). I am also focusing my attention on entirely new series, so sequel shows will not be included for the time being. Keep in mind I will comprehensively talk about the events in the first two episodes, so if you prefer watching shows blind, this series may be something you want to come back to after you watch for yourself.
