In This Video We Are Looking At In the last few days, two new Debian distributions have come into my focus: Titan Linux and SpiralLinux. While Titan Linux is committed to KDE Plasma, SpiralLinux is broader and caters to a wide range of desktop environments. The project was initiated by the maintainer of the openSUSE-based distribution GeckoLinux . With SpiralLinux 11.220610 it offers the desktop environments KDE Plasma, GNOME, Cinnamon, Xfce, LXQt, MATE and Budgie. Those who like to build their own system from scratch can use the SpiralLinux Builder, which relies on IceWM.

Debian with backports and non-free repo
SpiralLinux defaults to Debian 11 "Bullseye" with the backports repository enabled. There are instructions on GitHub on how to switch the distribution to testing or unstable in just a few steps. SpiralLinux wants to be ready for as many uses as possible immediately after installation with the Calamares installer and only obtains packages from the Debian repositories. The components main, contriband are non-freeunlocked in the source list. By default, Btrfs is used as the file system.

SpiralLinux brings a lot of features that a standard Debian lacks:

Installable Live DVD/USB images approximately 2GB in size and carefully configured for a wide range of popular desktop environments
Built from Debian stable packages with newer hardware support from Debian backports preinstalled
Easily upgrade to the testing or unstable branches of Debian with just a few clicks
Optimal Btrfs subvolume layout with transparent Zstd compression and automatic snapper snapshots bootable via GRUB for easy rollbacks
Graphical manager for Flatpak packages and preconfigured Flatpak tuning
Preconfigured font rendering and color theming for optimal readability
Pre-installed proprietary media codecs and non-free Debian package repositories ready for use
Extensive hardware support with a wide range of pre-installed proprietary firmware
Extensive printer support with customized permissions for printer management
Optimal power management with preinstalled TLP
VirtualBox support out of the box
Enable zRAM swap by default for better performance on low-end hardware
Ordinary users can operate and manage the system without having to use the terminal
Depends entirely on the Debian infrastructure, thus reducing the bus factor
The installed system can be easily upgraded to future Debian releases while preserving the SpiralLinux configuration

Btrfs snapshots and Snapper GUI
I particularly like the Btrfs subvolume layout with transparent Zstd compression and automatic Snapper snapshots, which openSUSE has offered for years. I've rolled back a snapshot a couple of times with no issues.

Otherwise, the developer sticks closely to the Debian ecosystem, as this makes it possible to access Debian's community for additional support. In its configuration, it addresses many points that can prevent a sense of achievement in a pure Debian installation.
